On 26 April 2021, the Terpel Organisation inaugurated the first public liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling station in Cartagena, Colombia.

The inauguration is part of a business strategy aimed at promoting and massively disseminating the use of LPG in the country for its environmental benefits and low cost, as well as facilitating mobility with all available energy sources.

The company will initially provide this service in Cartagena, at the Doña Manuela station, before launching expansion plans in Bogota and Medellin, and subsequently expanding to other cities in the country.

LPG, also known as autogas, is produced from a small mixture of propane, butane and other gases, and has high capacity, low cost and low particulate emissions.

As LPG is an intermediate fuel, it has become a widely used energy source worldwide, with some 27 million vehicles using it, according to the World LPG Association.

The company's announcement comes just days after the Ministry of Mines and Energy approved a regulation giving the green light to the use of LPG in land and river transport, as it was previously only allowed for cooking and heating in homes and only accounted for 2 per cent of the total national energy basket.

"With the opening of our first station in Colombia, we are proud to say that we are the only company in the country that offers all the energy sources that Colombians need for their mobility: liquid fuels, LPG for vehicles, liquefied petroleum gas and electricity. For Terpel's part, we will continue to innovate our service offering to continue to meet the needs of our customers and stay at the forefront of global energy trends," said Yohand Patiño, Terpel's Vice President of Sales.

"The entry of LPG into the passenger car segment will undoubtedly benefit both the driver and the environment. In the first case, owners can achieve savings of 30-35% with the same performance and efficiency as a petrol engine. In addition, this fuel offers a high degree of range, as every 40 litres of fuel used allows the car to travel around 140 kilometres. At the same time, the environmental benefits are also very positive, as the cleaner combustion process emits 81% less particulate pollutants and 21% less CO2," Patiño added.

It is estimated that almost 250,000 vehicles already use this fuel in Mexico, 287,000 in Peru and 20,000 in Chile.
