In the United States, it is considered "Biodiesel" when the mixture of traditional diesel with biodiesel of organic origin exceeds 20%, and is thus called B20, B50 or B100, indicating the amount of biodiesel contained in the mixture.
Biodiesel blends are subject to the same regulations and codes as diesel fuels. Blends up to B5 are considered normal diesel and are approved for use in existing diesel infrastructure. Mixtures above B5 are sometimes subject to additional requirements. Service stations considering using mixtures higher than B5 should first contact state and local authorities to identify other regulations and requirements.
There is enough positive experience with B20 and lower blends for EPA to allow B20 and lower blends to be stored in existing underground storage tanks approved for traditional petroleum gas oil. These are regulated by the EPA's Office of Underground Storage Tanks and blends above B20 must demonstrate compatibility with the stored biodiesel blend. Additionally, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulates fuel dispensing equipment, but does not specifically mention biofuels.
