Superethanol E85, composed of 65% to 85% biofuel, supplemented with gasoline, is a success in France. Ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, is produced from sugar beets and cereals (wheat and corn) through fermentation and distillation.
Ethanol has the double advantage of being renewable and reducing CO2 emissions, also called flexfuel is available at an average price of 0.995 euros per liter at the pump, which represents a saving of almost 1 euro per liter. The savings could reach 900 euros for vehicles that travel 20,000 km per year, even taking into account an additional fuel consumption of around 25%. In recent months, flex fuel has also benefited from increased availability. More than 3,500 service stations throughout the country already offer this fuel.
In addition to enjoying an economic advantage at the pump, E85 superethanol can count on a proliferation of subsidies from local authorities. The Hauts-de-France region, for example, offers aid of 40% of the cost of vehicle conversion, up to a maximum of 400 euros, subject to a means test. This aid can be combined with that offered by the departments of Somme, Oise and Aisne. In the Île-de-France region, €500 is granted for the supply and installation of a box, without means testing. Other regions also offer aid of 500 euros for the supply and installation of a box, with a limit of 50% of the cost of the work.
In February 2024 the average price of Ethanol in France was €0.90/l, maintaining a lower price than that of traditional gasoline.

Superethanol E85 continues to grow in France despite price fluctuations. Sales of this fuel increased by 5% last year, and the number of compatible vehicles increased by 23%. But sector agents expect growth to rebound more strongly in 2024.
Consumption of superethanol E85 broke a new record last year in France, with 895 million liters sold - representing a market share of 6.5% - but its growth has slowed considerably (+5% compared to + 83% of 2022).
