The start-up Stex was distinguished with the Born from Knowledge (BfK) awards, granted by the National Innovation Agency of Portugal (ANI), in the 7th Edition of the Agricultural Credit Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Stex develops green technologies for the production of liquid biofuels from waste. Stex operates a pilot plant within the facilities of the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of the National Energy and Geology Laboratory (LNEG) and plans to start up a biorefinery in the Iberian Peninsula for the production of bioethanol and other products from lignocellulosic materials. .

Stex's innovative process does not start from sugars (dominant technology in Brazil) or carbohydrates (technologies from Europe and the US). Stex's solution is based on the transformation of forest, agricultural or urban waste into bioethanol. Stex's clients are fuel distributors, which under RED II must incorporate at least 0.2% bioethanol into their products in 2022, 1% in 2025 and 3.5% in 2030.
