India doesn't need to wait for green hydrogen, it can start producing blue one

India does not need to wait for green hydrogen to become commercially viable, it can now start producing blue hydrogen from coal mined from its abundant reserves, said RK Malhotra, a member of the Indian Coal Hydrogen Production Task Force and former Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Indian Oil Corporation. "Combined with carbon management, hydrogen-from-coal technology can help meet the primary goals of a hydrogen economy. Coal can be the cornerstone of the diverse hydrogen supply mix," Malhotra said. in a presentation delivered during a session on the hydrogen economy organized by the World Mining Congress on February 24.

Malhotra advocated for seeding the hydrogen economy through blue hydrogen and called for rapid integration of CCUS technologies with coal gasification. "Blue hydrogen is already today a techno-economically viable pathway for the hydrogen economy, industrial decarbonization and the achievement of India's net-zero emissions target," he said.
