The price of hydrogen fuel in New Zealand varied with the season and the method of production.
The Ports of Auckland hydrogen production and refueling facility, for example, has offered hydrogen at a cost of NZD 15 per kilogram. Waitomo Group's hydrogen station in Auckland offered hydrogen at NZD 20 per kilogram, but this price included the cost of producing the hydrogen on-site using renewable energy. The cost of hydrogen fuel at the refueling stations planned by Hiringa Energy was not yet available at the time.
But more projects are taking place in the country, for example Hiringa Energy, a New Zealand clean energy company, plans to build several hydrogen refueling stations across the country. The company has secured funding from the government's Provincial Growth Fund to build three stations in Taranaki, Taupo and Palmerston North.
The price of hydrogen in New Zealand will be affected by new investments and the Ports of Auckland hydrogen production and refueling facilities. This facility, located in the Ports of Auckland, produces and dispenses hydrogen for use in fuel cell vehicles. It officially opened in August 2020.
